In 1741 Homilius, at that time still a student in Leipzig, applied for the position of organist at St. Petri in Bautzen. For his application he submitted five chorale arrangements. three for organ alone, and two for organ with a melody instrument. Just since the rediscovery of a manuscript now preserved in Northampton. USA. we know that this kind of scoring is typical for Homilius's chorale arrangements. 28 newly-discovered arrangements for organ and melody instrument. have now been added to the 41 known chorale arrangements for organ alone. Most of the instrumental variants in this edition expand considerably the repertoire and are published in this edition for the first time. Several other works which have been ascribed to Homilius are published in an appendix. The edition also contains the only preserved piece of chamber music by Homilius-a Sonata for Oboe and basso continuo-which was most recently discovered in a contemporary copy of the score.
