"""Pastorale"" was commissioned by Bill and Nancy Burdine for the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra in memory of their daughter Carol Anne. Carol, I was told, loved the sound of the harp. So the work opens with a harp soliloquy, which is immediately answered by a woodwind choir. This dialogue continues for a while until eventually the harp and the entire orchestra are both dancing to an imaginary waltz. The music is happy, carefree and sweet. When Max suggested a second performance of the work in 2012, I decided to revisit the work, twelve years later. I made some major revisions â not unlike the idea of renovating an old kitchen and bathroom. Now we can move back into the house again and enjoy it in its new disguise.
