A new, modern textbook on learning to play the flute has finally arrived on the Czech market. The First Touches by professor Frantisek Malotin. The systematic work-book is aimed at beginners on the flute, but it may also be used during pupils' entire time studying the flute at primary music school. The textbook contains many exercises for the gradual development of playing technique, but primarily in order for pupils to achieve a high tone culture, and it also has a colourful selection of pieces to be played accompanied by a second flute, guitar or piano. The book contains excellent findings and information, previously unpublished in the Czech Republic, such as beginning each exercise with a long note, the manner in which new notes are introduced, the reversed idea of top notes at the bottom and vice-versa, emphasis on the correct mouth position and note production, relaxed breathing, consistent indication of breath intake and the sufficient time needed for developing the correct breathing technique, exercises for practising harmonics, and finger exercises without producing sound. The textbook is very clearly arranged and the music exercises are accompanied by wonderful, inspirational illustrations. The book was published with the financial support of the Czech Music Fund.
