Rameau's Les Fetes de l'Hymen et de l'Amour was long considered second-rate because its premiere was associated with a political event. Yet this ballet abounds in novel dramaturgical effects that foreshadow his later operas, such as Zais, Zoroastre and Les Boreades. Working together with his librettist Cahusac, Rameau sought to weave the dance numbers, choruses and stage machinery of this so-called ballet heroique more tightly into the main plot. The scholarly-critical edition of Les Fetes de l'Hymen et de l'Amour has been available since August 2014 as linen-bound score. BA 8858. and since August 2013 as vocal score. BA 8858-90. This new score BA 7569 of Symphonic Extracts includes all of the numerous purely instrumental numbers included in Les Fetes de l'Hymen et de l'Amour. Characteristic for the era and genre of the ballet heroique are dance movements such as Gavotte, Rigaudon, Passepied, Sarabande, Gigue, Loure, Contredanse etc.
