B i o g r a p h y
 (by Nigel Williamson)

Having fought their way through a series of trials and tribulations that would have finished off a lesser band, the long-awaited second album (Oi Va Voi) takes their unique mix of global rhythms and club-friendly beats to new heights - bigger, bolder and with more attitude(ital) than anything even their most ardent fans could have imagined.

The band's acclaimed 2003 debut album "Laughter Through Tears", vibrant live shows and festival appearances made them everybody's tip for the top. Then, due to circumstances beyond their control, it all started to go wrong. A terminal dispute with their record company was followed by the loss of a band member and a serious illness within the band, initial attempts to record a follow-up album had to be put on hold. Twelve months on and Oi Va Voi have regrouped and regenerated on a new label with a new producer and the addition of exciting new recruits. Out of potential disaster they have fashioned a second album that expands Oi Va Voi's core sound with a whole new range of subtle yet vivid new hues and striking primary colours. Recorded in Israel and London, the songwriting is more crafted, the playing more fluid, and the diverse elements of their sound more fully integrated. If the last record left people wondering if Oi Va Voi were an electronic dance act, world music worthies or a rock'n'roll band, the new album renders such questions irrelevant by trampling the fences of genre and simplistic categorisation out of sight.

Oi Va Voi came together in the late 1990s when trumpeter Lemez Lovas, drummer Josh Breslaw, bassist Leo Bryant, clarinettist Steve Levi, guitarist Nik Ammar and violinist Sophie Solomon pooled their diverse musical backgrounds in left-field jazz, hip-hop, rock bands, drum n bass and Jewish klezmer. With the addition of K.T.Tunstall on guest vocals, their debut album fused modern dance music, singer-songwriter sensitivity and their Jewish cultural heritage with global rhythms drawn from Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean and beyond. Laughter Through Tears received rave reviews and won two nominations in the BBC Radio 2 awards for world music. Yet anybody who saw Oi Va Voi's spectacular live shows was left in little doubt that they were far more than a world music act with an enviable ability to rock a crowd and get a dance floor heaving.

Then in late 2004, KT Tunstall left the live set-up to become a million-selling, multi-platinum solo artist. The rest of the band congratulated her on her success, the search for a replacement was on. Their claim to have "auditioned every female vocalist in London" is only a slight exaggeration. Several were tried live, but none was quite right. Next Sophie Solomon signed a solo deal that ultimately proved incompatible with continued membership of the band. Meanwhile, the band and its record company were at odds over their future direction and to cap it all, illness within the group further hampered their progress. When they attempted to begin recording their second album in 2005, sessions were soon abandoned. There was far too much uncertainty in the air for them to focus fully on the task at hand.

Then slowly the realisation dawned that out of the ashes of their trials and tribulations, new possibilities could arise: not a chance to make a fresh start exactly, but certainly the opportunity to explore new spaces and expand their horizons. First they found the right singer in Alice McLaughlin, whose stunning voice combines the English purity of early Marianne Faithfull with something of the otherworldliness of Bjork. Next, producer Mike Spencer came on board. Best known for producing top ten hits for the likes of Jamiroquai and Kylie Minogue, his less celebrated recordings of traditional music in Sudan and Cambodia made him the perfect fit for Oi Va Voi's own unique eclecticism. More recently, Australian violinist Haylie Ecker from pop-classical string quartet Bond has been added to the extended Oi Va Voi live family.

With a new record deal in place, band and producer decamped to Tel Aviv. The change of scene proved to be a tonic and the second album began to fall into place. Work continued back in London and the result is an album that thrillingly realises all of the possibilities opened up by their debut album. Black Sheep, the first track recorded in Israel, represents a manifesto of all that is best about the band, the skittering beats perfectly counter-posed by thrilling Arabic strings played by members of the Nazareth Orchestra and a vocal by Alice that announces her as a memorable successor to KT Tunstall. Described by the band as "a kitsch space song”, Yuri, sounds like the French electronic duo Air kidnapped for the night by a bunch of crazed Russian gypsies in a Moscow vodka bar. Worry Lines and Dry Your Eyes illustrate how far Oi Va Voi have come as songwriters. The former features an aching vocal by lyricist Steve Levi, while the latter is as beautiful and dysfunctional a love song as you're likely to hear. Dissident is another tour de force with a stunning vocal by Hungarian folk singer Agi Szaloki offset by Levi's haunting cantor, while the instrumental Balkanic reminds us that Oi Va Voi were championing East European beats long before Gogol Bordello or Basement Jaxx.

Oi Va Voi have not only survived in the face of adversity. They've returned with an album of startling ambition and breathtaking audacity that triumphantly defies everything fate has conspired to throw at them

Tatar Love Song

(featuring Maiya James)

I don't know when I met you
And never could forget you
As stole a moment so naturally
'Cause time's so irrelevant
Bathing in manevalent
This is a fact you made me complete

Then you said you leaving for patches that agree not to
Better yourself fan to be free
Despite my reservations concerning our relations
I don't think I can just wait and see

I guess that was my even went to believing
We could dance in front of the sun
This why our case can even understanding you better
To trenching what they have done.

If we go on this journey the promise is eternally
How can I know that's for real
If you and I to get on and
Live for a bottle of wine
Find a way if it's meant to be

Call me a romantic and incurable pathetic
But all I wanna do is comprehend
If I no longer miss you and
Why do I still kiss you and
Dating that I don't want to end

Against my own villition and I had a premonition
Embracing faith and only for qualms
We lose all inhibition will follow intuition
And I had echo each other's own

Some may call it destiny
You're some kind of ??
Looking at for recipe both
Just one with from you
And will happen think it'll true
To see from your tempered love

If we go on this journey the promise is eternally
How can I know that's for real.
If you and I to get on and
Live for a bottle of wine
Find a way if it's meant to be

All I wanna do is mess myself from you
All I need from you is tending why don't you

All I need from you is the strength to seeing through
Help me just a little I don't know what to do

Baby...

When I'm in your arms I'm invincible baby
I want you forever I'm tired of waiting
When I'm in your arms I'm invincible baby
I want you forever I'm tired of waiting
When I'm in your arms I'm invincible baby
I want you forever 'm tired of waiting
When I'm in your arms I'm invincible baby

You ask me
Why it is I come to you
When someone else is just as good
I asked them but they said the same
Didn't even ask my name

Explain to me
Just what it is you have to lose
Take a minute in my shoes
Don't you feel like you've paid your dues
Already

I'll show you
That all our fates are so entwined
Don't lose your faith in humankind
Just don't forget my state of mind
Is fragile

Together
We can enjoy the taste of dignity
As long as you believe in me
I'll show you my reality
I've seen a few

You ask me
Why it is I come to you
When someone else is just as good
I asked them but they said the same
Didn't even ask my name

There's another refugee
There's another refugee
Oh oh there's another refugee
Oh oh there's another refugee

Yesterday's Mistakes

Don't need another resolution to feel
As though I'm going somewhere, somewhere

You said you needed me
Or at least that's what I thought
At times the memories
Seem to be knocking at my door
I've seen the film a million times
Feels like I wrote the storyline
I refuse to replay
The mistakes that we made yesterday

I like to think I'm stronger now
Victim of common sense
The truth is that I know I still
Confuse the past with the present tense
Condensing what we had
To a single frame
That sticks in my mind
As I try to move on
The same image comes back every time

They were yesterdays mistakes
And they were yesterdays mistakes
Yesterday's mistakes
Somewhere

Forgive my selfishness
I'd be grateful if you can
Forget my ingratitude
You think I'm twice the girl I am
They say we should forgive
But not forget
What has gone before
I refuse to replay
The mistakes that we made yesterday

And they were yesterdays mistakes
Yesterday's mistakes
They were yesterdays mistakes

I refuse to replay
The mistakes that we made yesterday
I refuse to replay
The mistakes that we made yesterday

I refuse to replay
The mistakes that we made yesterday
I refuse to replay
The mistakes that we made yesterday

I refuse to replay
The mistakes that we made yesterday
I refuse to replay
The mistakes that we made yesterday

Still will be heard

Still will be heard in the Mountains of Judas, And in the streets of Jerusalem
Still will be heard in the Mountains of Judas, And in the streets of Jerusalem

Translation :

Somewhere on the mountain side
The winter cold fell long ago
My little angel why did you have to fall out riding in the snow
If your arms are broken, tell me how
Will you ever hold me now
Darling then my little angel
How can I be yours again?

Look, in the distance there is a wood
But it is so far away
In the middle, in the middle
there are two rosemary bushes
Look, they are each leaning on each other, supporting each other
So you see, my darling little angel... somehow we will find a way.

Ladino song

Yo me enamoré de un aire
De un aire de una mujer
Una mujer muy hermosa
Linda de mi corazón
Yo me enamoré de un aire
Linda de mi corazón

Yo me enamoré de noche
En luna ella me engaño
Si esto era de día
Yo no daba amor
Yo me enamoré de noche
Yo no daba amor

If I fall in love
Sun above me love
It won't be by moonlight
Won't be by moonlight
Moonlight, moonlight

Si otra vez me enamoro
De un aire de una mujer
De una mujer muy hermosa
Linda de mi corazón
Si otra vez me enamoro
Sea de día con sol

If I fall in love
Sun above me love
It won't be by moonlight
Won't be by moonlight
Moonlight, moonlight

Oh If I get to you
All I'm wanted to
It won't be by moonlight
Won't be by moonlight
Moonlight, moonlight

Won't be by moonlight
Moonlight, moonlight
Won't be by moonlight
Moonlight, moonlight

( Feat. Earl Zinger )

Now there's many tales
In many cites to tell
And there's so many ways
That the story is told

There's a room with no bed in the heart of the ghetto
Where the rags and words lie still
There's a room with a chair in the heart of the city
But only memories sit there
Princelet street in the heart od the ghetto
Still Katz sells bags and strings
Calling you back are the streets of the ghetto
Climb the stairs where you're from
There's a room at the top of the heart of the gheto
Where the gypsy's been and gone

Oh see them watching
Oh streets always watching
They're a watching now
Oh see them watching
Oh ghosts always watching
They're a watching now

Saying them prayers by edge of the city
And now it's time to move on
New voices talk in the heart of the ghetto
Make a little money move on
Memory thieves in the heart of the ghetto
Don't want ghosts movin' on
But the gypsy's on the loose in the heart of the city
And now ya see he move on

Oh see them watching
Oh streets always watching
They're a watching now
Oh see them watching
Oh ghosts always watching
They're a watching now

Listen to the street move on
Letters and numbers move on
Gypsy always move on
See him there then he gone
See him there then he gone
Always go to move on
See him there then he gone
See him there then he gone
Always go to move on
Always go to move on
Always go to move on

It's all about identity
Construction of a family
Of difference and simile
What I give you and you give me

It's all about identity
This tribal sense of dignity
Of tolerance and unity
Of prejudice and bigotry

It's all about identity
A web of who we'd like to be
Let's cut and paste our memory
A dark and timeless industry

It's all about identity
A strength and solidarity
A dazed, confused desire to find
A place and time in history

It's all about identity
Or how the sheer majority
Impose a predetermined badge
And wait to judge you silently

It's all about identity
A retrospective odyssey
But where I live and who I meet
Are stronger in defining me

There were jewish musicians who
Who's life music was

A jewish wedding or a jewish holiday
Can not go by without shedding a lot of tears
We must do a lot of crying

We cry always
When a baby is born we cry
Why, tears of joy
When the baby becomes Bar or Bat Mitswa we cry
When we leave them to the weddings, to the choepa, we cry

All nations the world over, all people
Whenever they celebrate the new year
They dance into the new year
We swim into ours, we used to say
Because if you went into the rosj hasjana
If you walked into the synagoge
You could swim into the ocean of tears

Yuri

( Words by Lemez Lovas )

Russian radio translation:
"This is Moscow speaking, all radio transmitters in the soviet union are broadcasting.
We have received news from the state news agency Tass about the world's first flight of man in space."

I am a rocket
The power of the system
It's bullet-proof technology
Oh we're going to a new world
Going to a better place

This is just the first step
And everyone will follow me
Hold me up as an example
There's no need to watch my back
'Cause my friends have got it for me

I'm gonna go down in history
As the man who made a difference
Call me egotistical
Well how dare you care you call me selfish
I'm doing this for mankind

'Cause I am a rocket
A child of the motherland
Pioneer for humanity,
I'm a wholesome superhero
For the worldwide society

We're heading out to outer space
We're going forth for the human race

'Cause I am a prodigy
A part of the master plan
A symbol of equality
Blasting out into the future
I'm a man defying gravity

They'll build me a monument
Name everything after me
Schools and hospitals
Armies of boys and girls
I'm gonna live forever
Immortality is mine!

We're heading out to outer space
We're going forth for the human race

We're heading out to outer space
We're going forth for the human race

"The cosmonaut pilot of the space ship Sputnik Vostok

pilot Major Yuri Alexeyevich Gagarin."

Further Deeper

( Words by Lemez Lovas )

I feel deflated
Let down by heroes
Walls of silence
Soak up the echos
Of my ideals
Sold down the river
I blame my own
Naive behaviour
Time again
I'm a complete beginner

I have a theory
Too complicated
To explain now
Don't make me waste it
But you should realise that
For your freedom
I might just hurt you
But I didn't mean to

Our flesh and blood
In mute agreement
We stand like idols
We should be kneeling
A single signal
I'll flick the lever
And we'll all go falling
Further deeper

When the day comes calling
That's when we'll go falling down
Won't we all go falling down

Look down

(words by lemez lovas)

When I need you beside me, i can do things to myself I regret
My thoughts become distant, my mind turns everything right on its head
I search in vain for the positive, to stop all the demons from talking aloud
It's not that I'm lost, it's just there are times i don't want to be found

I'm feeling my way
One step at a time
I know that you're there
But I can't always find you
The next thing I know
The circus begins
And I'm walking along
Doing anything not to look down

Don't let go of my hand, I'm doing anything not to look down

When I need you beside me, at times I'm afraid 'cause I don't know the cost
I focus my thoughts, or at least those that I hope I can trust
I start to feel all the maybes slowly spiral inside of my chest
Guess I'm no good at perspective so I should admit this is what i do best

I'm feeling my way
One step at the time
I know that you're there
But i can't always find you
The next thing I know
The circus begins
And I'm walking along
Doing anything not to look down

Don't let go of my hand, I'm doing
Anything not to look down

Black sheep

I've had enough of all the clichés
Out of sight is out of my mind
I've had enough of all the life-changing advice
They invent to pull the wool over my eyes.
I've had enough of all the clichés
The thought that nothing is even enough
I'm fine until the fears – they catch me unawares
Creep up and start to whisper sweet nothings in my ears.

I'm sending out thins tune
To places i once knew
To all the people i have lost
I'm sending out this tune
To another space and time
To another day in my life.

I've had enough of all the clichés
Sticks and stones they never break me in
But every single word, no matter how absurd,
Leaves the faintest trace under my skin.
I've had enough of all the clichés
I don't assume the things i cannot see.
I try not to be rash – to ponder all the facts –
But false conclusions always seem to jump to me.

I'm sending out thins tune
To places i once knew
To all the people i have lost
I'm sending out this tune
To another space and time
To another day in my life.

Makes no difference
When I try

Dry your eyes

What kind of path was it
That brought us to this place
So far from that first kiss
To this emptiness
How did all our trust
Fall down between the cracks
Can we ever comprehend
How it came to that…

Baby baby dry your eyes
Guess it wasn't meant to be
I can only rationalize
See you in another life
When all has turned to grey
We'll be born again as birds
Learn how to fly away
And life won't be so absurd

Last you held me near
The memories made me freeze
Throwing motions absently
In a parody
As we lie side by side
The water rushes in
Seems like a bridge too far
Beyond the place we're in

So i guess we found the line
Where you and I begin

Stepped over the other side
Wish we could start again

I lost my voice but kept my sight

Travelling The Face Of The Globe

Waiting

Whenever I remember you and I
So many years since you were by my side
And still my thoughts you occupy
And still your face is frozen in my mind

It's hard to win, easy to lose
We play a game we cannot choose
As steady as a rocking horse, as subtle as a bruise

I could've been the one still with you but something in the way
Brought our private universe into the cold light of day
Just when I have forgotten you that's when the longing starts
Nostalgia seeps into my head and I realize that I've been

Waiting for all these years
Waiting for all these years

Whenever I'm alone in troubled times
My silent screams, my innocence, my crimes
I wish that you were still here by my side
Without you here the darkness magnifies

It's hard to win, easy to lose
It's a lovely game we cannot choose
As steady as a rocking horse, as subtle as a bruise

Waiting for all these years
Waiting for all these years

I could've been the one to love you but something interfered
Took away the innocence and our world just disappeared
Just when I think I'm over you something unlocks the past
Memories pour into my brain and then the longing starts

Waiting for all these years
Waiting for all these years
We just been
Waiting for all these years
Waiting for all these years

Travelling The Face Of The Globe

You and I we share another language
Of Inca treasures and hidden pots of gold
We've seen wonders you can only dream of
In search of legends of old

Hitch-hiking across the Atacama
A desert like the surface of the moon
Make a fire, eat cactus fruit and sleep beneath the stars
In the morning we'll leave for Peru

Looking high, searching low
We are travelling the face of the globe
Down the rivers and the open roads
Where adventure lies we will all go

We venture the heights of Machu Picchu
Ignoring the danger sign on the jungle trail
The serpent's bite it only serves to strengthen our resolve
'Cause tonight is the night we set sail

Looking high, searching low
We are travelling the face of the globe
Down the rivers and the open roads
Where adventure lies we will all go

We're rafting down the rapids of the Urubamba
We sail there with our pockets full of hope
Surely distant shores can't hide forever
'Cause where the river goes nobody knows

Looking high, searching low
We are travelling the face of the globe
Down the rivers and the open roads
Where adventure lies we will all go

I know what you are

I look up at the sun rising
I know what you are
The shadows you cast on the lonely horizon
I know what you are

You can't fool me
I've seen what you'll be
I know what you are

Lord knows, I know
You put on a good show
I know what you are

I looked in the glass
Your reflection escaped me
I know what you are

You lead me around with a blindfold
Now I see
I know what you are

You can't fool me
I've seen what you'll be
I know what you are

Lords know, I know
You put on a good show
I know what you are

And I will hide my face (Deut. 31:18)
(translation)

You can't fool me
I've seen what you'll be
I know what you are

Lords know, I know
You reap what you sow
I know what you are

I ever knew, I ever know
I know what you are
I ever knew, I ever know
I know what you are

I look up at the sun rising
Shadows cast on the horizon
I look up at the sun rising
I know what you are

Every time

Every time I see your face
I know the love that lies and waits for me

And every time I look at you
Your eyes they say the same thing back to me

And every time I look above
I see a light I know there's something waiting for me

"Hears"
(translation)

Every time you go away
I lie beside a cold and empty space

And every time I turn a page
Your hands begin to fall down from your face

And every time I look above
I see a light I know there's something waiting for me

"Hears"
(translation)

Every tear in your eye
Is a drop in my mind
And I know that you love
And I know that you love

Every tear in your eye
Is a drop in my mind
And I know that you love
And I know that you love

S'brent

[Author and Composer: Mordkhaï Gebirtig (1877-1942)]

Es brent! Briderlekh, s'brent!

Our Town Burns

[ Translation ]

It burns, brothers, it burns!
Our poor shtetl pitifully burning,
Angry wind with rage and curses
Tears and shatters and disperses,
Wild flames leap, they twist and turn,
Everything now burns!

And you stand there looking on
Hands folded palms upturned.
And you stand there looking on
While our poor shtetl burns.

It burns! Brothers, it burns!
Help can only come if you return.
Love which shtetl once inspired,
We'll take up arms, put out the fire.
Douse it with your blood, be true, show what you can do!

Don't just stand there looking on,
Your hands folded, palms upturned,
Don't just stand, put out the fire,
Our poor shtetl, it burns, brothers, it burns!

Dusty roads

I've walked these dusty roads for seven days and seven nights
The only guidance that I keep's the monochrome moonlight
Although the stars above me whisper songs to comfort me
I'm still a solitary girl seeking company

Way back, a haystack and the zodiac, three minds in empathy
A rucksack, the train track and a paperback's all I need to comfort me
I pass through pint-sized places that I'll never see again
I'm still a solitary girl seeking out a friend

Slickback, wisecrack, I can smell a rat
Ransacked, setback, down another cul-de-sac
Bullwhack, maniac, sitting on the train track
Crookback, lumberjack, think I better backtrack

I've walked these dusty roads for seven days and seven nights
The only guidance that I keep's the monochrome moonlight
Although the stars above me whisper songs to comfort me
I'm still a solitary girl seeking company

Foggy day

Another foggy day in this old town
Hidden by the mist that's all around
I walk the street though they don't know my name
Been so long call them home all the same

Another foggy day in this old town
The heart of the sun beats without a sound
I pace the streets to drive away the gloom
And contemplate the air that I consume
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Another foggy day but I'm elsewhere
Surfing skies like oceans of blue air
I let the current carry me away
Out of range of narrow-minded ways

Above the city's gaze I climb and climb
I leave the weight of urban grime behind
I sail through clouds and float on silver skies
The world's a nicer place from up on high
Yeah, yeah

Another foggy day in this old town
Hidden by the mist that's all around
I walk the street though they don't know my name
It's been so long call them home all the same

Another foggy day in this old town
The heart of the sun beats without a sound
I pace the street to drive away the gloom
And contemplate the air that I consume
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Wonder

If I didn't need you
You wouldn't see me standing here
And if I didn't love you
I wouldn't have returned your tears

if I could never see you
I might as well be completely blind
Something between your gaze and mine
Will keep us forever entwined

Long Way From Home

The stars in the southern skies dance in her eyes so sincere
The watery moon starts to rise and to croon to the spheres
The sandy wind kisses your cheeks and she wishes you well
You're wondering when you might be here again under her spell

Your penchant for fun seems to roll off the tongue like a dream
The night is still young there's still time for fun before you leave
Under the palm trees you're weak at the knees from the way she stares at you
Those exotic eyes completely mesmerise you

You knew all along that as soon as you'd gone there'd be tears
Your eyes are a blur as the memory of her perseveres
On and on in your mind you're repeating the line that she whispered in your ears
"I can't let you go without a little souvenir"

Now that you're gone
You feel so alone
You're empty handed and you're stranded such a long long way from home

Now that you're gone
You feel so alone
You're empty handed and you're stranded such a long long way from home

A long way from home you continue to roam and explore
If things go to plan you'll see many a land from Brazil to Ecuador
When she asks "do you miss me" your eyes go all misty
Your heart is tied in knots
But it'll unravel the further you travel and all we be forgot

Now that you're gone
You feel so alone
You're empty handed and you're stranded such a long long way from home

Now that you're gone
You feel so alone
You're empty handed and you're stranded such a long long way from home

Stitches and runs

I prepared with a needle and a thread
To patch our love instead of listening to my head
As you left the room, my heart filled up with gloom
I knew that it was doomed, all along I had presumed

That you'd weave your spell but only I could tell
Your stitches and runs left patchy holes as well
You sew a web of lies, so why am I surprised
When you look into my eyes a part of me dies

You pretend, it wasn't what you meant
That all the things you said were made up in my head
On your knees, the words you said to me
Tumbled out in twos and threes as if you couldn't quite believe

I'd turn my back and walk on down the track
You never had the knack of treating me with tact
Day and night, you weave another fantasy
Of stitches and runs that go on for eternity

He worked by candlelight
Just stitching up his love for me
His fingers are so light
And all the while I coulnd't see

He was up all day and night
Just weaving out our history
He tried with all his might
To get the best of me

(Passage from "J'accuse" by Emile Zola)
This is the plain truth and it is frightful
I repeat with the most vehement conviction
Truth is on the march and nothing shall stop it
I have said it elsewhere and I repeat it now
When truth is buried underground, it builds up
And acquires an explosive force
That is destined to blast everything with it
(Passage from "J'accuse" by Emile Zola)

This is a photograph of you
This is a slice of history
This is the path that I have chosen
All these moments define me

And in the photograph I see
All the faces of my friends
And the painting on the wall
Frames a distant memory

This is the letter I once wrote
Penned by the light of misfortune
I hear the words that I had chosen
Like along forgotten tune

Words that open up new directions
Carving shapes in history
And the image of my reflection
Smiles at me in sympathy

The years sweeten my recollections
As a simple courtesy
And the view outside my window
Is a constant remedy

Are these the roads that I have taken
Or twists and turns of circumstance
Of all the times that I remember
These are the seeds destiny plants

And in the photograph I see
All the faces of my friends
And the painting on the wall
Frames a distant memory

Memory Drop

Arrival

Where is the river that runs through the heart of all this sand
Where is the fountain and the park that grace all of this sand

I'll pace the walkway of my life
I am no longer alone
I'll pace the walkway of my life
I am no longer alone

I see a fallen face
That's lived so many lives
The lines upon his brow
The light there in his eyes

I'll pace the walkway of my life
I am no longer alone
I'll pace the walkway of my life
I am no longer alone

I see a fallen face
That's lived so many lives
The lines upon his brow
The light there in his eyes

Vanished World

Am I losing my faith
Am I losing my ideals
When my words are drowned out loud
Disappear into the ground

Oh, could it be conquered
Is it hidden in a place
Can it be made
Can it be faked

A vanished world
That I can see
A vanished world
That I can breathe

And what is this, the very idea
The only way to be
Another chance just taken away
The only way to be

A vanished world
That I can see
A vanished world
That I can breathe

And the city will rise, as your voice changes
I can hear the echo
What was not there now fills the air
I can hear the echo

A vanished world that I can see
A vanished world that I can breathe
A vanished world that I can see
A vanished world that I can breathe

Address unknown

Do I look like a stranger
Remote in your eyes
Have you been drawn in
Hypnotised

As I stand here before you
Do you have family like mine
Or am I nameless
One more denied

Do you wake up each morning
With fear in your eyes
Will I take away everything
Your way of life

And where has this poison
It comes not from the sky
A lifeless river
A darkened mire

Do I look like a stranger
Do I look like a stranger
Do I look like a stranger
Do I look like a stranger

Big Brother

These are the clothes that my big brother wore
And his elder brother and his brother before
These are the short pants which reach to the floor
For I'm much much shorter than the brother before

This is the hat he no longer wears
For he has big brother and now he wears theirs
And the socks I put on are in non-matching pairs
And the jumpers have sleeves full of patches and tears

This is the sole of my brother's shoe
His big brother wore it and his brother too
And my mum said "My girl, I shall give it to you
It's an honour to walk in your big brother's shoe"

These are the clothes that no rag man would buy
With holes that have holes through which seagulls could fly
But I wear them and wish it was not always I
Who's the youngest young sister and the smallest small fry
The smallest small fry

Searchlight

Your unspoken words in my head
Secrets that weren't told still echo
And now I'm standing here in headlights

No one left to say in my life
The quiet still resounds in my time
I see the silence lives in headlines
I see the silence lives in headlines

No world away, cold daylight
And now I stand in headlights
No world away
No world away

Question, come from out of my mouth
Loud I let it hang in my time
And now I'm facing down the searchlight
And now I'm facing down the searchlight

A splintered torn reality
A thin veneer is all I see
Stripped away so easily
Unravelling in front of me

No world away, cold daylight
And now I stand in headlights
No world away
No world away

Through The Maze

Rain on the pavement falls
Washes it all away, I'm tired
Through doorways and alleyways
The route that look me through the maze
The light on your door, left on all night till dawn

You won't let me down
You won't let me down
You won't let me down
You won't let me down

I'll slip into your car
And drive away so far from it all
Neon lights pierce the dark
As we drive so fast
And as the world flies by
The light that blurs in my eyes

You won't let me down
You won't let me down
You won't let me down
You won't let me down

Suddenly the world slows down
I hear my thoughts without a sound
A window on the world is mine
A clear blue sea for miles and miles

I run down to the shore
A cool wind blows that I adore
I run down to the shore
A cool wind blows that I adore

You won't let me down
You won't let me down
You won't let me down
You won't let me down

You won't let me down
You won't let me down
You won't let me down
You won't let me down

Empty boxes

A tower of babel grows overnight
It looms blocking out all the light
Down river there are places no one sees
Down river there are traces of my dreams

No footsteps pacing in the sky
No curtains hang, no dreaming spires
No voices ring the change of life
Just empty boxes in the sky

The writing's on the wall for all to fear
Each storey tells no story I can hear
Down river there are places that I go
Down river there are places you don't know
Down river there are places no one sees
Down river there are traces of my dreams

No footsteps pacing in the sky
No curtains hang, no dreaming spires
No voices ring the change of life
Just empty boxes in the sky

Light in your eyes

When your voice rings in my ears
Gentle comforts replace the shame and tears
Without you, I feel the pain
Some kind of fever, a hunger fans the flames

Look into my eyes, tell me what you see
Beneath the words that hide in me
Blinded in disguise, lost identity
Now tell me what I cannot see

I can see the light in your eyes
And the fire that you hide
I can see the light in your eyes
Our promises are alive
I can see the light in your eyes

From this prims, behind a wall of words
I see through them, I run but I can hear
Voices singing, candles flickering
Repetitions, the wheel of life begins

Look into my eyes, tell me what you see
Beneath the words that hide in me
Blinded in disguise, lost identity
Now tell me what I cannot see

I can see the light in your eyes
And the fire that you hide
I can see the light in your eyes
Our promises are alive
I can see the light in your eyes

Opium

Drip drip feed internalise
Faces names into my mind
Same old tales, same old feuds
In the guise of evening news

Six o'clock I'm bleary eyed
Sugar words rush into my mind
It's of no consequence
Where you choose to lay your head

Is this the opium of the people
Is there a blindfold of my eyes
Is there a silent conversation
To divert my wired mind

Drip drip feed internalise
Corrodes my soul and fills my eyes
Gradually sending me insane
Seeps into my brain

Small hands out at my door
Count the hours from now till dawn
Now there's nowhere else to turn
A story that's no longer heard

Is this the opium of the people
Is there a blindfold of my eyes
Is there a silent conversation
To divert my wired mind

Shelter

And if a stranger sojourn with you in your land
You shall not do him wrong
