Composer Tom Duffy is adventuresome and always rewards those who travel with him on his musical adventures. This latest publication explores, in broad terms, the social, political, and religious effects realized by the efforts, struggles, and legacies of two famous Martins, Martin Luther and Martin Luther King, Jr. Using hints of chorales and chorale treatments, slave songs and (true to Duffy's penchant for introducing the human voice into his works) hollers, finger snaps, and chants evoking the struggles and human dignity of slaves (however enslaved, literally or figuratively), this is, ultimately, a celebration of dignity, pride, and rising above conditions of the moment. This is a beautiful and beautifully-written new work for band.
